Science - Space!

Hello again Digital Students!
Some good news for you all today: Our class is going on a field trip. At the end of the week, we will all be going to the Ontario Science Centre. Since this is the International Year of Astronomy, it only seems fitting that we will be visiting the space and exploration. Don't worry, we'll be able to enjoy all of the other exhibits as well.

To get you ready for our trip, please check out the following websites. The first is a link to a clip from YouTube that shows some of the opening ceremonies at the Science Centre's International Year of Astronomy celebrations. The second is a link to another YouTube clip showing what the inside of the International Space Station looks like.

Interesting stuff.

Math - Measuring Angles

Look out Grade 6s, it's time for another Math Attack!

Today in class we were working on measurement and examining angles. You all did a very good job, but I can see that there are a few things that we might need to practice a little bit. Everyone was given a protractor to take home and this is where that will come in handy. This website will be very helpful for Monday's lesson, so please take a few minutes to check it out and try to solve some of the problems. You may need to put your protractor right up on computer screen so make sure you push gently.

I'll be available via email, so if you have any questions please use the link on the Digital Classroom blog. As always, please feel free to make constructive comments to this or any of the other postings. If you've found a good link or if you've made a connection to something else on the Internet please share it with the rest of the class.

Math - Adding Decimal Digits

Hello again, boys and girls and welcome back to our digital classroom.
We had a really good day in our math class today working on adding numbers with two digit decimals in them. It's not an easy concept to grasp so I recommend you take some time today to surf to this site I've included so you can get some more practice. When you finish answering the first set of questions, please click the "Next Game" button to get a new set of numbers.

We will keep working on this for the next couple of weeks so a little practice will certainly help.

As always, please ask if you have any questions.

Science - Flight

Hello fellow aviation enthusiasts.

Today in Science class I introduced a new unit for us to study, and that unit was Flight! We're going to be doing a number of interesting things, including using our problem-solving skills to design, build, and test a flying device... in other words, we're going to be building paper airplanes!

To get us started on this, I want you to surf to the website link I've included below and start getting ideas for your plane. We'll be making them in class over the next few weeks and trust me, it's going to be a lot of fun.

For Monday, please come to class prepared to begin designing your paper airplane. Please make some notes based on the plane designs found at this website: Paper Plane Patterns. Examine the designs and make a few preliminary decisions as to what you want your plane to look like, and what you want it to do. Will it be a trick plane that can do loops and spins? Will it be a long-range flier that can go the distance? Maybe it will be a speedster that can cross the length of the classroom in mere seconds?

Looking forward to seeing your design plans on Monday. Hope you have a good weekend!
